Zoe Hopf's works are expansive cyanotypes –
a photographic negative technique, reacting to incident UV-light.
A world of light and shadow.
Where light does not encounter the canvas, shadow shows opposite to its nature,
where the light streams – a rich blue.
Solar altitude and the influence of wind vary the extent,
shape and contour of the shadow of the object.
Works, developed in the outside, dealing with vegetation, show this pristine arbitrariness.
Bushes, trees and grass emerge in their vividness.
Her way of working is connected to strolling, a practice of pausing and thinking,
connected with the discovery of places.
Other works exhibit deliberate strictness.
They develop under artificial light.
Light-intensity, time and distance become controllable factors.
Works formalize themselves to photograms or visualize
physical characteristics of the canvas or the light by gentle transition
or fade by interaction with the emulsion.
The seemingly monochromatic works consist mainly
of picture series, processing themes.
Contemplating arouses the curiosity to discover the secret of the materiality of an object.
The nuances of the blue shades give hints.
Images of landscapes force on references, seasons, diffusion.
The technique does not approve scaling.
It is what it is.
The immediacy of images confronts the viewer with the own proportionality.
Proximity and distance to the pictures continuously shape it.
Namely, light and shadow remain a duality,
labelled by humans through all times with synonyms,
but in the end remains blue – to sink into.
